Like many, I’m a long-time reader of the very insightful “Creating Passionate Users” weblog. Most of the articles are authored by Kathy Sierra, a veteran in the technical publishing industry who has an eclectic background in software and web development. Kathy is also the founder of one of the largest community web sites in the world, javaranch.com.
One particular post that stuck with me: Code like a girl
I am always on the side that the “pretty” code will pay off later, the uglier the codebase the more we’re afraid to dig into it.

I’m a big fan of Kathy’s blog as well. When speaking, I often refer to her statement: “There’s a big difference between saying, “Eat an apple a day” and actually eating the apple.” - http://headrush.typepad.com/creating_passionate_users/2006/week36/index.html
In my experience, most teams believe building software is good, testing is good, code/design reviews are good…but many teams have a difficult time in repeatably and reliably running builds, tests and performing reviews.
